Life is a journey, a grand adventure, meant to be explored with awe, wonder, inspiration and excitement. Sure, sometimes we are faced with difficult situations, unexpected twists and turns.. but aren't those what make life so exciting? The difference between someone who enjoys life to the fullest, and falls in love with everything that life has to offer, and someone who doesn't is gratitude.
Gratitude is the key..
Now, that's obviously easy to say, another thing entirely to fully embody. It takes practice, commitment and energy to show up, even when things feel challenging or hard, and connect to a state of gratitude. That's why there are so many tools that can help.
Some amazing tools I use on a daily basis are:
1. Gratitude journal
Keeping a gratitude journal can be as easy as writing three things you are grateful for before you go to bed.
2. Create stillness
Making time for stillness through meditation or contemplation is as easy as sitting in silence for 5 minutes and simply witnessing the thoughts that come to you.
3. Daily affirmations
Repeat your affirmation as much as you can throughout the day, and especially when you notice any negative thoughts arise. Examples of affirmations to use are: "I am grateful" or "I love myself.” Humans have over 60,000 thoughts a day and the majority of those thoughts tend to be negative. The power of bringing a positive affirmation will have a profound impact on rewiring your thought patterns. If you become aware of a negative thought because something happened (i.e. you get cut off in the car) repeat, "I am grateful" and just bring awareness to what happens.
4. Say “What a time to be alive!”
The most important thing I do is remind myself, as often as I can, how amazing this life we get to live is. I do this by saying, "What a time to be alive!" anytime I feel grateful for something. This has become a habit and I say it upwards of 10-20 times a day. For example, you press a button on your phone and 24-48 hours later you get that thing you pressed on a screen in the palm of your hand-delivered to your door. That deserves a good ol' "What a time to be alive!" or you get in your car, drive to the grocery store, and have the ability to pick from a wide variety of fresh produce to eat, well damn, "What a time to be alive!" I promise the more you do this, the more you will start to notice the positive things in life.
Each of these are so simple, yet, so powerful.
Gratitude is the key that unlocks the gates to the kingdom of heaven. Then comes Love - for the journey, the adventure, the entire experience of life.
